<p><strong>COURSES OFFERED BY THE COLLEGE INCLUDE: </strong></p>
<p><strong></strong><strong>1. </strong><strong>DIPLOMA IN TROPICAL AGRICULTURE, (DIPTA) – 3 YEARS</strong></p>
<p><strong>Entry Requirements</strong>: SSCE, WASSCE with 6 passes including English, Maths and Science, GCE ‘O’ level, Cert. A teachers, NVTI NCC, City and Guilds advanced, and MOFA Certificate in Agric.</p>
<p><strong><em>Graduates Participate in National Service Scheme, Graduates are also able to enter the UNIVERSITIES in the second or third year based on their class.</em></strong></p>
<p>2. <strong>CERTIFICATE IN GENERAL AGRICULTURE: 2 YEARS</strong></p>
<p><strong>3. NATIONAL VOCATIONAL TRAINING INSTITUTE (NVTI) </strong>– Grade ONE and NCC = 2 years</p>
<p>4. Ghana Education Service – <strong>City &amp; guilds Advanced = </strong>2 Years</p>
<p><strong>Entry requirements for certificate courses:</strong> NVTI Grade TWO and ONE, <strong>Farm institute Grade A, NACVET</strong>, <strong>WA/SSCE</strong><strong>with 4 PASSES including English, Maths and Science</strong>, GCE ‘O’ Level 4 passes. (Proceed to the Diploma with NCC and proceed to University)</p>
<p>5. <strong>SHORT CERTIFICATE COURSES</strong> in Poultry, Farm Management, Snail, Rabbitry, Grasscutter, Piggery, Horticulture and Landscape design, vegetables, Beekeeping, Turkey, Organic farming, Permaculture, Agribusiness, Entrepreneurship, Project proposal writing and Computer science.</p>
<p>Civil Servants who want to start their own agribusinesses can partake in any of the above courses and gain the technical skill, the business development skill and professional support to begin their own enterprises. KITA technical staff will be able to provide follow up consultancy after training to help participants set up their farms.</p>

<p>As a modest institution located in its new site, about 8 kilometres east of Kumasi and 3 kilometres (on map) from U.S.T., training is done in collaboration with a lot of institutions including Ghana Organic Agricultural Network (GOAN), the Research Institutions (CRI, SRI, ARI, FRI), it has the recognition of the Ministries of Food and Agriculture (<a href="http://www.ghana.gov.gh/governing/ministries/economy/agric.php" target="_blank">MOFA</a>), Education (MOE) and the Manpower Development and Employment (MMDE).</p>

<p>The Professional Farmers College of KITA offers Diploma and Certificate Courses in Tropical Agriculture both residential and Distance learning components at its center located between Domeabra and Apromase in the Ejisu Juaben district of the Ashanti region of Ghana.</p>
<p>KITA&#8217;s center for Community Extension and Rural Development focuses on development of Rural communities through the provision of training, research and empowerment of farmers groups to improve food security, environmental conservation and wealth creation.</p>

<p>KITA was established in 1984 as a follow up to a research report in 1976 that proposed that an agricultural technical college be established to cater for young school leavers who wish to take up farming as a career and to improve upon the skills of traditional farmers in Ghana.</p>
<p>In 1985 KITA was granted certificates to operate as a non-profit making institution under a <a href="http://www.kita-ghana.org/about_us/management.htm">Board of Trustees</a>.</p>
<p>KITA has the recognition of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (<a href="http://www.ghana.gov.gh/governing/ministries/economy/agric.php" target="_blank">MOFA</a>), Ministry of Education (<a href="http://www.ghana.gov.gh/governing/ministries/social/education.php" target="_blank">MOE</a>), Ministry of Manpower Development and Employment (<a href="http://www.ghana.gov.gh/governing/ministries/social/manpower.php" target="_blank">MMDE</a>).</p>
<p>Since then the institute has assumed national and international importance, training students from Africa, Europe, America and all over the world and also promoting environmental conservation and <a href="http://www.kita-ghana.org/community/activities.htm">rural development</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Goals</strong></p>
<p><strong>Its goal is training, consultancy, research for agriculture and rural development and the protection of the environment for sustained increase in agricultural productivity.</strong></p>
<p>The activities of the institute revolve around this goal with special reference to youth, women, and peasant farmers at grassroots level.</p>
<p><strong>KITA IS  A CERTIFIED MEMBER OF IFOAM: </strong>(<a href="http://www.ifoam.org/" target="_blank">International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements</a>) and has been making a major contributing to the promotion of organic and natural farming in Ghana.</p>
<p><strong>KITA is a certfied Organic Exporter: </strong>In October 2006, KITA was approved as an exporter of organic and natural agricultural products for the produce of farmers trained at KITA. KITA Looks forward to network with interested organic importers and exporters from around the world.</p>

<p>2008 &#8211; Kita introduces <a href="http://www.kita-ghana.org/services/short_courses.htm"><strong>competency based farmer education and training programs</strong></a> to assist prospective and practising farmers to improve upon their managerial and technical skills. <p><strong>2008 &#8211; KITA builds the capacity of SME&#8217;s under the Rural Enterprises Project of the GOG/IFAD/AfDB</strong>.</p>
<p>KITA provides training consultancy in building the capacity of Rural Small and Medium Scale Entperpreneurs in Managerial and Business Development Services provision under the Rural Enterprises Project (REP) of the Ministry of Trade and Industry of the government of Ghana. KITA&#8217;s role is to undertake community miobilization, train Rural SMEs in marketing, management and records keeping, enterpreneurship, business advocay, credit management, group dynamics, cassava and oil palm processing as well as other non-farm agro enterprises such as mushroom production and processing, snail farming, beekeeping, grasscutter rearing, soap making and pito brewing. This was to build the capacity of SME&#8217;s to become competitive and provide employable skills to the unemployed in the rural areas. KITA is currently still providing support services to SMEs under its &#8220;Center for Agribusiness and SME development&#8221; (CASMED) as part of its community development initiatives to create employment for rural youth and build the capacity of Farmer Based Organisations to be credit worthy.</p>

<p>2004 &#8211; KITA initiates the <strong>National Youth Agricultural Cooperative Centers (NYACC)</strong> with the Ministry of Manpower Development, Youth and Employment MMYDE:</p>
<p> KITA provided consultancy services under the Skills Training Employment Placement (STEP) Program  of the MMYDE to provide training and employable skills to unemployed youth in the northern sectors of Ghana. Through this project KITA introduced the National Youth Agricultural Cooperative Centers initiative as a center cooperative owned by the community <strong>for youth training, continuous vocational education and employment center</strong> where the youth undertakes production, marketing and revolving credit scheme to enhance their ability to be self sufficient and dependent. Youth undertakes activities such as mushroom production, snail rearing, arable farming, vegetable farming, rabbitry, among others to enhance their livelihood. KITA is looking for partners to sponsor this initiative to enhance competitive youth employment generation in the rural areas especially in the northern sector of the country.</p>

<p>KITA hosted training for new Peace Corps Volunteers for the Environment, Education and Water, Health and Sanitation Sectors in agro-forestry and alternative livelihoods in November and December 2010 to equip the volunteers and their counterparts with skills to develop rural livelihoods.</p>
<p>The Peace Corps volunteers were trained in seed treatment, nursery management, gardening, mushroom production, beekeeping, rabbitry, grasscutter and snail rearing and agro-forestry technologies such as alley cropping, woodlots among others  on the KITA campus at Domeabra Apromase in the Ejisu District.</p>

<p>Mr. Lovans Owusu-Takyi, Training Programs Coordinator for KITA and Trees for the Future Ghana urged the Peace Corps Volunteers for the Education Sector  to establish schools Treepals environmental clubs and work with them to set up school gardens, plant trees and train them to be environmentally responsible. Mrs Mary Norah the APCD Associate Program Coordinating Director for the Education Sector said she will work with the Education volunteers to ensure environmental education is improved in schools in Ghana.</p>
<p>The Environment Sector Peace Corps Volunteers led by their APCD, Mr. Nicholas Nyale, will also be working with farmer groups and schools in rural communities to enhance food security and income generating projects among the farmers to improve thier livelihoods. Lovans Owusu-Takyi urged the volunteers to teach farmers to develop agroforestry technologies to solve environmental problems and improve soil fertility and organic farming practices on their farms.</p>
<p>The water and sanitation volunteers led by Mr. John Adepa the APCD, was trained at KITA on the 9th of December 2010 and provided moringa seeds in order to set up projects to improve nutrition and income generating projects with their women groups in the rural communities. Moringa has been known to have very useful nutrients that improve nutrition. The women groups will also use the moringa leaves for soap making, creams and other income generating projects </p>
<p>Lovans Owusu-Takyi, with support from Trees for the Future USA donated one watering can each as well as nursery tools and seeds of moringa, leuceana and albizia lebbek to each of the volunteers and thier counterparts to enable them to begin tree nurseries in their communities  . The water and sanitation volunteers received mushroom bags each in order to promote mushroom production for income generation and nutrition development among the women groups.</p>
<p>The Peace Corps volunteers arrived in Ghana in June 2010 and have received training of various kinds in order to adapt well to the culture and gain the technical skills to empower people and improve the lives of the rural dwellers they have been posted to.</p>

<p>We are pleased to inform you that on December 3rd 2010,  KITA received an award as the <strong>Best Institution</strong> from the <strong>Ministry of Food and Agriculture &#8211; MOFA </strong>once again at its 26th National Farmers Day celebration in the Ashanti region in recongition of KITA&#8217;s immense contribution to the development of Agriculture in Ghana. This is the second time since 2007 that KITA received such an award.
